This has been quite a year for our Open the Doors campaign. From our Days of Action in January to a new government sworn in after 16 years, to Minister Melanie Mark meeting with the FPSE Presidents’ Council in Victoria, 2017 has been a whirlwind of activity and change.
On October 16, college faculty across Ontario went on strike due to their employers’ refusal to continue with negotiations around pressing issues educators are facing: unequal pay and precarious employment, lack of academic freedom, and the absence of faculty in post-secondary governance structures. These issues are not only harmful for educators but also to the post-secondary system overall.Read more
During our election campaign in the spring, over 25,000 people across BC signed our Education Pledge calling on the government to make post-secondary education more accessible and affordable. FPSE President George Davison and Secretary-Treasurer Terri Van Steinburg took those voices to Victoria where then Advanced Education Critic Rob Fleming presented them in the legislature.Read more
